Dr. Bimal H Patel is an Architect – Planner with over 26 years of cumulative experience in consultancy, research and teaching. He is a 1984 graduate of the School of Architecture, Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad and holds a 1988 dual post-graduate degree in Architecture and City Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, USA. He has also earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Regional Planning from the same university in 1995.
Currently, he is Director of Hasmukh C Patel Design and Project Management Pvt. Ltd. (HCPDPM). Bimal has built on his father Hasmukh C Patel’s design philosophy and is currently responsible for extending the vision of the company and steering its growth. He is committed to make ‘Paritosh’ an innovative laboratory of design, planning and development management ideas and practice. Bimal is also actively engaged in understanding and transforming urban design and urban planning practice in India to make them more effective in improving the quality of life in Indian Cities. He is the Director of Environmental Planning Collaborative, a not-for-profit professional planning research and advocacy organization. EPC has been doing pioneering work in developing planning methodologies appropriate to the present Indian context. He also heads Geographis (India) Pvt. Ltd., a mapping and GIS Company.
Bimal H Patel is the recipient of prestigious scholarships, fellowships and awards including The Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1992, the World Architecture Award in 2001, UNCHS Best Practices Award in 1998 and the Prime Minister’s National Award for Excellence in Urban Planning and Design in 1998. He has also delivered public lectures at national and international forums and served as Visiting Professor at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology, Ahmedabad and as Graduate Student Instructor at the Schools of Architecture and Planning at the University of California, Berkeley.
He has been a consultant to the World Bank and Asian Development Bank and served as Member on the Justice J U Mehta Committee, appointed in 2002, to recommend reforms in the Building Regulatory System of Ahmedabad. Besides, he has also served as a Member of the Expert Study Group of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for preparation of Policy Agenda and Legislative Intentions for amendments to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957 and for framing the new Building Bye-laws for Delhi.
